Early morning in the fishing port of Jafarabad, Gujarat, India. The women put the evening's catch of fish onto vertical drying racks by lamp-light. The main catch here is a variety of lizardfish known as “Bombay Duck”. The local women are paid INR 300 (US$4.00) per day for this kind of work, while most of the men make INR 200-250K working on the boats for the 8-month season. The dried fish, a cheap (INR200/kg) source of protein used in curries and pickles, are sold throughout India, and some are exported to Bangladesh. They are prized for their taste and have an extremely pungent odor.
