Concrete-lined fish farms divide up all the space between houses and narrow roadways in Jiadong, near the coast just south of Kaohsiung. The ponds are for raising high-value fish, primarily grouper and Indian salmon, that are exported to Hong Kong and China. They are fed fish meal and vitamins to prevent viruses and parasites. In other areas, I saw milkfish being raised in mud-lined ponds, but the milkfish are worth 20-25% of the fish being raised here. With the vast majority of Taiwan's land being too mountainous for agriculture, the society has come to depend on marine life for food. One farmer told me the harvested 240,000 kg of fish per year from 14.34 acres.
