Distributing roti as part of the free meal for visitors in the langar hall of Amritsar’s Golden Temple. This is the world’s largest community kitchen, which produces free vegetarian meals for four million visitors per month. The food and labor are a mixture of donations and volunteerism, and meals are offered 24 hours/day in their two main dining rooms where up to 1,200 people sit on the marble floor at a time to eat hot nutritious vegetarian meals. Meals typically consist of roti, rice, dal, a vegetable dish, and dessert. Visitors volunteer to help with cutting vegetables, making roti, cooking and serving food, and cleaning the dishes afterward. The food cost averages about 9-10 rupees (10-12 US cents) per person. The meals are all shared communally, with open seating that does not separate visitors by race, sex, class, or religion.
